Join us as we kick off Season 2 of 7 Questions Peterborough with a special segment recorded live at a 40-year anniversary gathering for the New Canadians Centre, an organization  committed to welcoming, inspiring and encouraging newcomers to this community. Andrew spent the afternoon interviewing a wide range of folks – from long-time loyal friends and partners to newcomers who have recently arrived in Peterborough.  We hope you enjoy this season opener as much as we loved meeting and speaking with the people who helped make this event so special.

Meet Rosemary Ganley

Activist,  teacher and writer Rosemary Ganley joins Carol and Andrew for an unforgettable interview reflecting on  a lifetime of work dedicated to making the world a better place.  Sharing her experiences of moving her family to live and work in Jamaica, Rosemary is a champion for human rights, the environment, and the power of seizing the moment -when she learned she was heading to the Women Deliver conference in Vancouver in May, Rosemary decided to add a visual statement to her travelling wardrobe and had a handmaid’s uniform made.

Meet Kim Dolan of PARN, Executive Director of Your Community AIDS Resource Network

Kim Dolan believes everyone matters. She’s been working hard for people who don’t have a voice most of her life. In a recent news story,  Kim shares how working at the YWCA Crossroads Shelter in 1989 was a turning point in her life.  “As my thoughts about women’s access to resources changed, I experienced an inner transformation of my values and beliefs.”

As the Executive Director of PARN she is committed to building a Peterborough where everyone is welcome.

Kim is looking forward to connecting with her community on May 1 when PARN hosts its annual ‘A Taste for Life’ fundraiser in Peterborough and the surrounding areas.

Meet Rick Fines – musician, storyteller, father

Rick Fines grew up in Peterborough during an era when the city’s manufacturing industries were thriving, your parent’s profession was described as either blue or white collar, and musicians got their start at the Red Dog Tavern and the Dick Turpin Lounge.

For more than 38 years Rick Fines has been living a life of music – as an award-winning songwriter, performer and teacher.

Whether he’s performing on his own, or with the legendary Jackson Delta, this award-winning troubadour loves to cook Indian food, spend time with his family, welcome newcomers to our community, and so much more.

Meet Avery Esteves,  Actor

Naturally gregarious and charismatic, Avery credits his reputation as class clown for his foray into acting. “My parents wanted to channel my energy,” says the 12-year-old whose journey into the world of acting began at the age of eight.  Avery’s early experiences as an actor have garnered him national and international commercial spots (Carnival Cruise Lines, Air Canada – Winter Olympics, Swiss Chalet, Dr. Dreadful, Rusty Rivets). His recent projects have positioned him as a supporting character in the feature horror film “A Wakefield Project” due out later this year, and as a co-host on the U.S. series “The Big Fun Crafty Show” (Universal Kids). Avery’s work in Second City’s improv program showcases his love for comedy and character development which parlayed into voice acting in animated series’. Avery is renowned for his voice talents and ability to embody a wide range of characters. Most recently, he earned a lead role on a hit animated series broadcast worldwide. He was thrilled to take home a “Joey” Award in Vancouver this past November. “The Last Wife” marked Avery’s first experience as a stage actor.  Join Carol and Andrew as they speak to Avery about everything from his favorite place to eat, to gaming, to why he treasures a special coin that’s brought him good luck.

Meet Tessa DeSouza

Tessa is a Special Education Resource Teacher in Peterborough who happens to be a gold medal Masters division kayaking champion.  Balancing these two passions can be challenging, especially when kayaking with alligators.  When speaking with Tessa, who radiates warmth and positive energy,  it’s clear her attitude allows her to face obstacles head on. Join Andrew and Carol as they learn more about Tessa – an advocate and role model for her love of sport, an advocate for children and lover of life and the outdoors.

The Journey

One day you finally knew what you had to do, and began, though the voices around you kept shouting their bad advice– though the whole house began to tremble and you felt the old tug at your ankles. “Mend my life!” each voice cried. But you didn’t stop. You knew what you had to do, though the wind pried with its stiff fingers at the very foundations, though their melancholy was terrible. It was already late enough, and a wild night, and the road full of fallen branches and stones. But little by little, as you left their voices behind, the stars began to burn through the sheets of clouds, and there was a new voice which you slowly recognized as your own, that kept you company as you strode deeper and deeper into the world, determined to do the only thing you could do– determined to save the only life you could save.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Meet Christopher Wilton – he came to Trent University because it offered a program like no other in the country – Cultural Studies. Like so many of us, he  left and then came back to Peterborough to raise a family. Find out more about Christopher who shares his passion for art, literature, his work as a sommelier and a teacher, in this episode of 7 Questions Peterborough.

Meet Jeremy Kelly

Jeremy Blair Kelly is an independent filmmaker, photographer, and furniture builder who is passionate about his work, his family and in his spare time, racing cars.
